Libraries Are Focus of Oct. 10 Meeting

The Fairfax County library system, which has come under fire for destroying nearly 250,000 books, will host a community dialogue on the libraries, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m., about its new strategic plan. The meeting will held in the Thomas Jackson Middle School Cafeteria, 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church, VA 22042.

Under the new strategic plan, the county would reduce staffs, eliminate master’s degree requirements for branch managers, and allow books to float among the libraries, rather than give them a permanent home.

A series of community forums were scheduled after broad public anger followed books of widespread book destruction by the library system. The meeting at Jackson is co-hosted by Supervisor Linda Smyth (D-Providence), who helped bring public attention to the discarding of books by taking the photo above.
